La Route Bleue was a luxury bus line that connected London and Paris with the French Riviera. With the precision of an architectural drawing, influential French-Ukranian graphic designer A.M. Cassandre’s (1901–1968) advertising poster uses strong diagonal lines that converge off the canvas to draw the viewer’s eye towards the soft glow of a distant horizon. An expert draftsman capable of mixing fine art with commercial illustration, he shrewdly alludes to the passenger’s prospective journey with the strict vertical rhythm of a tree-lined road reminiscent of bus windows. This poster is a 1998 reissue from the original design made in 1929.
