Nicolas de Staël – abstract painter of Russian origin, working in France. He was born in St. Petersburg, he was the son of General Vladimir Staël von Holstein. In 1919, he left for Poland with his parents. He then lived in Brussels and later in Paris. In 1939 he joined the Foreign Legion.
