The arctic puffin is among the most beloved animals in the northern hemisphere. Not only because their charming looks. But because they have a central position in the North Atlantic culture and self-understanding as well. Each year, millions of puffins travel back to the place where they were once hatched themselves. Here they reproduce, raise their off-spring, and then return to the solitary life far out on the open sea. Just to do it all over again the following year. Today the puffin is a vulnerable animal species whose population is endangered. Therefore, many countries have introduced visit restrictions in the puffin’s nesting areas. This has had a very positive impact on the raising population. These photographs are intended as a reminder of how important it is that we protect nature for future generations to enjoy.
